One of my most significant achievements has been leading the Wings to Fly program, Africa's largest secondary school scholarship initiative run by a corporate foundation. At its peak, this program supported an extraordinary 40,000 students across 2,000 schools in Kenya, providing access to quality secondary education for vulnerable yet academically gifted youth.
My strategic acumen proved instrumental in securing additional funding from the World Bank through Kenya's Ministry of Education, facilitating an expansion from 8,000 to 40,000 scholarships. This monumental growth opened doors to educational opportunities for countless students and underscored my ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships and leverage partnerships to amplify impact.
Fostering Holistic Student Development
However, my vision extended beyond merely ensuring access to education. I recognized the importance of nurturing students' personal growth and leadership potential. Drawing from my expertise in climate change and sustainable development, I applied a systems thinking approach to address the multifaceted challenges that students face.
I strengthened the program's mentorship component, introducing a comprehensive curriculum focused on transformative leadership, academic excellence, community service, value-based living, and gender sensitivity. This holistic approach not only bolstered academic performance but also equipped students with the skills and mindset to thrive as responsible global citizens.
Under my guidance, the program achieved remarkable outcomes, with a 97% secondary school completion rate and an impressive 82% of students qualifying for university admission, far surpassing national averages.
Building Effective Program Management and Delivery
At the core of my success lies my proficiency in program management and delivery. I structured my team into specialized units, each dedicated to a specific programmatic component, such as scholarship management, mentorship, scholar welfare, technical and vocational training, and leadership development.
This strategic alignment enabled seamless execution, accountability, and synergy across various initiatives. My emphasis on frameworks, timesheets, planners, and dashboards ensured meticulous tracking and continuous improvement, fostering a culture of excellence within my team.
